Facebook recently decided to integrate advertisements into timelines
of users in hopes of giving companies and businesses more exposure when
they are paying for advertising. However, users began complaining
because their timelines were being flooded with advertisements from
anything and everything, including banks, consulting services and weight
loss. Surely, many users threatened to quit the social media network if
advertisements were not changed or removed. And now, the company is
trying to use algorithms to sort out the advertisements to appeal more
appropriately to users.
According to a new Mashable report published on Aug. 23, the social media network site Facebook is now ready to remove some of the pages that are showing up in timelines to make sure that people are getting content relevant to them. The algorithm in place uses “several factors into account to determine its place on the News Feed: the author and number of likes, comments, and shares,” reads the report. Rather than removing the advertisements from timelines, which would lose money for businesses and essentially the networking site, it sounds like the new algorithm will focus more on finding “high quality content.”
“The updated algorithm considers “over a thousand different factors” — including the quality of the page’s other content and the level of completion on the profile — when determining whether a post is high quality, according to the blog post,” reads the article. It sounds like users should expect to see updates over the next couple of weeks, meaning the targeted advertisements could start making sense. If it works, then companies should get more hits because users are genuinely interested in the content. Hopefully, it will work well for the company, not force users to quit in frustration.
Do the advertisements in the timelines bother you?
