Valley Voice: Dead car Donate it to the air museum The Desert Sun

Funny thing about nonprofit organizations like the Palm Springs Air Museum, we never have enough money. So we rely on our members, their friends, family and individuals like you to keep the doors open. Whether it's donations of money, cars, boats, airplanes or even golf carts, we know how to stretch a dollar. A recent event occurred at the museum — true story and an example of how we not only survive, but thrive. This past summer, a museum member kindly donated a golf cart for the museum's use. Unfortunately, the six batteries needed to hold the charge were kaput! Replacing six batteries costs quite a bit — $850 to be exact, and the museum's purse was empty for any non-budgeted expenses. Now what? A call went out to the staff if they knew anyone who might want to purchase a golf cart in need of new batteries. Just so happens, I did. A family friend who volunteers all over the valley and a Marine and a member from the First Marine Division Association/Desert Cities Chapter was looking for a golf cart to decorate for the 50th anniversary of the Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade. I put our Marine friend in touch with the museum to negotiate a price and went back to work. Now you might think this is the end to a happy story. It's not. It gets better. Unbeknownst to our friend, and now armed with the cash from the sale of the golf cart, the museum could purchase a much-needed desk for their newest employee, me. For the previous three months, I had been writing grants and learning the ins and outs of the museum on a student-size desk. As you start winding down the year and before you pull out your holiday ornaments, take an inventory. If you can't fly it or ride in it, why not donate it to the Palm Springs Air Museum? We'll put it to good use and you'll receive a tax deduction, plus two free passes to the museum. What a great way to start the New Year!
