In the German North Sea, 80 wind turbines now under construction will eventually generate enough power for some 400,000 homes. That power will travel via advanced cables buried along several miles of ocean floor, part of a growing move toward undersea transmission of electricity.

Submarine power cables have been around since the early 1800s. But for most of their history, such cables were used primarily to transmit electricity from conventional sources such as coal plants, either between countries or out to islands or oil platforms.

As recently as a decade ago, the submarine cable industry was in decline. That changed in the mid-2000s, as rising energy prices and concerns about climate change stimulated interest in developing offshore wind and more efficient transnational power grids.

The worldwide market for submarine electrical cables has surged over the past decade, according to industry observers, and is set to grow even more. A report published in November 2013 by Navigant Research, a Boulder, Colorado-based firm that tracks the energy industry, predicts that global sales of high-voltage submarine power cables will nearly triple over the next decade, from $1.9 billion in 2014 to more than $5.3 billion in 2023.

Bringing the Sea's Wind Energy to Shore

"I can tell you that there is a demand for submarine cables," said Walt Musial, principal engineer for the National Wind Technology Center, a program of the U.S. Department of Energy. "Offshore wind installations are growing in number—you're seeing development in the North Sea and the Asian markets, and there's a strong possibility the market will develop in the U.S. as well."

Per-Arne Osborg, a Norway-based research and development manager at cable-maker Nexans, also predicts continued growth, particularly in high voltage DC (HVDC) submarine lines that can transmit electricity for long distances with fewer losses than alternating current, or AC, lines. "Yes definitively, the renewable power has to be distributed and a grid capable of transporting the power will be needed," Osborg said in an email. The $340 million submarine transmission cable being built for DanTysk, the wind farm in the German North Sea, will stretch nearly 99 miles (159 kilometers). The company building the line, Italian-based cable-maker Prysmian Group, also is a player in Western Link, an ambitious plan to link Scottish and English power grids with a $1.1 billion, 239-mile (385-kilometer) submarine cable under the Irish Sea. And Canada is moving ahead with construction of a $1.5 billion line that would allow Nova Scotia to import hydroelectric power from Labrador.

Specialists work on cable at a transformer station at the DanTysk wind farm. Underwater cable will also be needed to transmit electricity from the turbines.

Forging such underwater connections will help nations use electricity more efficiently and take advantage of distant renewable sources, while also preserving green space on land, said Julian Pease, a U.S.-based Prysmian business manager for submarine cables.

"Scotland has more offshore wind farms to build, and that power is needed in the south of England," he said. "It would have been difficult to get government permits for the traditional method of using overhead lines, because it would have cut across a lot of picturesque countryside. This is an alternative solution, which reduces the environmental impact."

Pease said that wind power provides about 60 percent of the market for cables. In addition to long lines to shore, a wind farm with 200 turbines also might require as much as 125 miles (200 kilometers) of cable to link them all together.

Costs and Unknowns

Burying cables about 6.5 feet (2 meters) under the ocean floor, which involves the use of specially designed ships and robotic vehicles, does have some environmental impacts, according to a 2009 report by the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic. Cables can provide artificial habitats that attract animals and plants not normally found in an area, "but such change is not likely to be significant," the report said. But because of a lack of research, not as much is known about what, if any, effect of electromagnetic fields and heat generated by the cables might have on aquatic life, the report noted.

But proponents of submarine cables argue that improving energy efficiency on land and reducing emissions of greenhouse gases will tip the scale positively in the long run. One salient example is the 360-mile (580-kilometer) Nor Ned submarine cable, which allows Dutch consumers to draw on hydro power generated in Norway during daytime peak demand period, while Norwegians can draw power from Dutch coal-burning power plants when they need it. The increased efficiency produced by the linkage reduces carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 1.7 million tons per year, according to cable maker ABB.

Nor Ned, which was completed in 2008, currently is the world's longest submarine power cable. But far bigger projects have been proposed. Perhaps the most ambitious is the 621-mile (1,000-kilometer) submarine cable that Iceland's state-owned electricity firm Landsvirkjun has proposed building to Great Britain, which would supply some of the island's abundant geothermal, hydro and wind energy to British consumers. British financier Edi Truell is exploring how to raise more than $6 billion needed to build the line, whose feasibility is still being studied.

In the United States, Google and other sponsors want to connect the mid-Atlantic region with a high-voltage submarine cable that would bring offshore wind power to New Jersey and other states in the region. But that offshore wind capacity doesn't exist yet: Projects such as the Atlantic City wind farm proposed by Fisherman's Energy have suffered regulatory and other delays, and the website for the Atlantic Wind Connection lists the cable's completion date as "TBD."

Google was willing to invest in the $5 billion Atlantic line, it said, because it made "good business sense" and because otherwise, each wind farm project would need to build its own transmission lines, causing delays and grid inefficiencies.

In a strong display of unity, several large US tech firms have come to the defense of Facebook, as the social network contests a court order which required it to hand over users' data.

Google, Microsoft, Twitter and Drop-box are among those who have filed court documents arguing that the search warrant violated the US Constitution.
In June, Facebook revealed it had given a New York court the personal data of 381 people involved in a fraud trial.
Only 62 of those were later charged.

A lawyer representing some of the medium-sized firms, including Foursquare and Tumblr, expressed concern that "smaller entities, such as start-ups and other developing companies, may not always have the resources to litigate," when confronted with a government search warrant.
'Gag orders' But the firms were most angered by the fact that the entire proceedings had been kept private by the court.
Two months ago, Facebook revealed that the US government had obtained "gag orders" to prevent it from telling the account holders that their data had been passed to prosecutors.
The story was only revealed almost a year later, after a New York judge agreed to make the process public.
The tech firms rallying behind Facebook said it was "far from clear" that the order had served a compelling government interest.
A separate filing was made by both the New York and American Civil Liberties Unions, who outlined their opposition to the court's decision, warning that "Facebook users are at risk of dilution of their constitutional rights".

Buzzfeed gets $50m backing from venture capitalists

Internet media company Buzz feed has received a $50bn investment from venture capitalists Andreeson Horowitz.

Buzz feed, which was valued at $850m, says it will use the money to offer more content, expand its video production unit and open more offices around the world.

It hired a team of journalists and now blends its irreverent style with hard news.
The Buzz-feed audience is growing and 75% of hits come via social media referrals, either by Facebook, Twitter or Pintrest.
'Disruptive media' The site gets roughly four times more viewers per month than the Times and was valued more than three times higher than the Washington Post which was bought by Jeff Bezos for $250m this year.
In a blog, Chris Dixon explained that his company invested in Buzz-feed because it is "disruptive" - it's changed the landscape of online media.
One of the reasons its been able to do that is because it understands the the way the internet works.
All of the content is available on and formatted for mobile, targeting people who browse while standing in a queue or traveling to work.
'Buzz-wood' One of the big things the company is planning to do with this cash injection is to put more resources towards Buzz-feed Motion Pictures, its video unit based in Los Angeles.
It will concentrate on producing videos which could be anything from six seconds long to a one hour documentary.

Portfolio Assessments Help Online Students Earn Credit

Online students can get credit for work experience by documenting their knowledge.

Creating a portfolio can be a great way to save adult students time and money, experts say.

In the decade before she decided to get her online bachelor’s degree in business administration from Golden Gate University, Bethany Meyer spent most of her days in California working as a human resources professional in the restaurant industry.
When it came time to enter her program, she realized she knew plenty of the material covered in her required courses. The problem: she had the work experience – not the academic credit – to prove it.
Meyer’s school adviser suggested she try something called portfolio assessment, a process that would allow her to gain credit for a specific course by documenting what she already knew. ​

"When my counselor mentioned it, I thought, 'How can this actually work and get me legitimate transfer credits?'" says Meyer, who had also taken a handful of college courses elsewhere throughout the years. "Honestly, I wish I was told about it a long time ago. I would have definitely taken advantage of it."
Adults like Meyer who want to earn academic credit for knowledge they​ acquired​ elsewhere have the option of testing out of courses. ​
But when exams aren't available, portfolio assessments are a great option, says Pamela​ Tate, president and CEO of the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning​. ​​ Students can contact their own schools about the portfolio process or work with Learning Counts, part of Tate's organization. Students who pursue the latter option take a six-week​ online course worth three credits. The course costs $895, and the cost includes the development and assessment of the first portfolio.
The course walks adults through how to create a portfolio that matches a class given by an accredited college or university. ​
"A lot of it has to do with reflection and realizing how your skill and hands on learning translate into more formal learning," says Meyer. "It teaches you to search for a formal course posted within a university system and how to make sure it qualifies."
Although portfolio requirements depend on the course students are trying to get credit for, students will typically need to compile evidence of their learning – anything from resumes to letters from supervisors – and then write a narrative discussing how their knowledge relates to the class, Tate says. A human resources professional, for example, might talk about how her ​ leadership courses related to those at a university or submit a copy of a handbook she​ designed. 
Faculty trained and chosen by CAEL then assess the portfolio. If they approve it, Learning Counts submits a credit recommendation transfer from to the program where the student hopes to get credit. ​
The cost for submitting each additional portfolio –​ after the first one that is developed during the course – ​is $125. While that, on top of the course fee, may seem like a significant sum, it can actually allow students to save on education costs. ​
Students only need to pay for the portfolio course one time​, and then they are free to submit as many portfolios as they would like. ​ Since many courses are more than $1,000, submitting a ​portfolio instead of taking the course can save students a lot. ​.
Portfolio assessments not only save students money, they can also help students save on time.

"For many adults coming back to school it’s frustrating to sit in a 14-week course studying something you already feel you know," says Paul LeBlanc, president of Southern New Hampshire University, which works with Learning Counts​ to usher students through the portfolio process. "Adults are very direct that it feels like a waste of time. This gives them a way of demonstrating they know what they think they know."​
Portfolio assessment has been an option for 40 years through CAEL​, but it only recently had a surge in interest, Tate says. Today, the process is an option at about half of the country’s colleges and universities. Most students who pursue portfolio assessment are online learners eager to finish their degree quickly so they can tend to their family and work commitments, she says.
CAEL has agreements to accept the assessments from Learning Counts with about 120 universities. If students end up at other schools, however, Tate says students can also ask about the process and may also be able to get their credit recommendations accepted.

Microsoft today announced the Nokia 130, a simple, inexpensive handset meant for first-timers and emerging markets. The candy bar-style phone runs the Series 30 platform and includes a 1.8-inch screen, stereo headphone jack, Bluetooth 3.0, and support for memory cards up to 32GB. According to Microsoft, the Nokia 130 supports both video and audio playback, and includes an FM radio. The phone has a flashlight, but no camera. Microsoft Devices Group includes the handset division of Nokia, which Microsoft acquired earlier this year. Google Scoops Up Directr Video App Adds It to YouTube

Google recently acquired a small video app called Directr. The app helps users shoot better videos by offering templates they can use to build different shots before piecing them all together into a single, polished video. Two versions of the app are available, one for personal use and another intended for businesses. The app is free, but users need to pay $0.99 to download finished videos. The business app cost several hundred dollars per year and could produce higher-quality videos worthy of testimonials and/or advertisements. Google said Directr’s employees will join YouTube's video advertisement team. Google will eventually make all versions of the app free to use. Google did not disclose terms of the deal.

Apple and Samsung said they will cease squabbling over patents in various courts around the world. "Apple and Samsung have agreed to drop all litigation between the two companies outside the United States," they said in a statement. "This agreement does not involve any licensing arrangements, and the companies are continuing to pursue the existing cases in U.S. courts." Apple and Samsung have been slugging it out in courts for years over smartphone patents in countries around the globe, including Australia, Germany, Korea, the Netherlands, and the U.K. The two companies still have ongoing unresolved court cases in the U.S. Apple won a major victory in 2012 and a smaller one earlier this year, though the cases are in various stages of appeal.

HTC One M8 to Add Mirror Link Support for Cars

HTC and the Car Connectivity Consortium today announced that a forthcoming software update will make the One (M8) Mirror Link compatible. Mirror Link is a connectivity tool for pairing smartphones and cars. It works across smartphone platforms and car manufacturers, and, according to the CCC, is the only vendor-neutral standard available. With Mirror Link aboard, the One (M8) will be able to connect to select in-car infotainment systems,m allowing drivers to more safely access their phone's content when behind the wheel. It's unclear how many cars currently support Mirror Link, but the CCC hopes with HTC's support more will choose to support it. Apple and Google both recently announced their own connectivity solutions for cars, which are expected to appear in iOS 8 and Android Release L, respectively. HTC said it will add Mirror Link support to mode devices down the road.

Smartphone camera makers see cars

YONGIN South Korea: South Korean smart phone camera makers are tapping the surging yet more technologically demanding market for vehicle cameras to dull the impact of slowing growth in global handset sales.

High-end cars can carry as many as eight cameras to visually aid parking or trigger emergency brakes. That number could reach 12 when cameras replace side-view mirrors, according to Mcnex Co Ltd, a phone camera supplier of Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Korea’s biggest car camera maker.

As the technology reaches mid and lower-end cars, the market for vehicle cameras could grow seven-fold from 2011 to nearly $6.6 billion in 2018, said Techno Systems Research.

That amount can only rise with regulation such as compulsory rear cameras in the United States from 2018 to stop drivers backing into pedestrians. Also adding to demand will be the spread of camera-laden self-driving vehicles like those of Google Inc.

“We expect the vehicle camera market to experience explosive growth,” Lee Hyo-cheol, a principal research engineer at Korean auto parts maker Hyundai Mobis Co Ltd, told Reuters. But cameras have to be far more robust for cars than phones.

Gold prices rise

Gold climbed to a three-week high on Friday after US President Barack Obama authorised air strikes in Iraq, and the metal looked set to post its best week in seven as global geopolitical tensions spurred safe-haven demand.

Bullion also got a boost from a drop in Asian share prices on growing fears that conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East could sap global growth.

Obama said he had authorized limited US air strikes to blunt an onslaught by Islamic militants in northern Iraq and begun military air-drops of humanitarian supplies to besieged religious minorities to prevent a “potential act of genocide”.

The 10-year US Treasury yield hit a 14-month low and the dollar slipped against the safe-haven yen, showing increasing risk-aversion in financial markets.

Spot gold hit $1,318.60 an ounce, its highest since July 18, and at 0532 GMT was up 0.1 percent on the day at $1,315.

Copper prices steady

London

Copper prices steadied on Friday, but remained near a five-week low due to increased supply and lackluster demand from top consumer China.

Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange (LME) closed at $6,995 a tonne, compared with $6,970 at the close on Thursday.

Buoyant exports from China pushed its trade surplus to a record last month, fueling optimism that global demand will help counter pressure on the domestic economy from a weakening property sector.

Its copper arrivals, however, dropped 2.9 percent month-on-month in July, falling for a third straight month, after small importers delayed refined metal shipments. The metal, used in power and construction, sank to a five-week low on Wednesday at $6,951.75 a tonne.

In the latest development in the Ukraine crisis, the head of NATO urged Russia to “step back from the brink” of war by pulling its troops back from the Ukrainian border.

LONDON: England fast bowler Stuart Broad, who suffered a fractured nose on Saturday, was named in an unchanged 13-man squad for the fifth and final test against India at the Oval next week.

Broad, who took six for 25 in India’s first innings to win the man of the match award, retired injured while batting after being struck in the face by a Varun Aaron bouncer, with the ball splitting his nose after becoming lodged in his helmet.

The 28-year-old, who will have an operation on his troublesome right knee after the test series against India, later left for X-rays that showed he had fractured his nose.

Siri might be making her way to a Mac near you. According to a patent application filed in February and released today, Apple's considering bringing the iPhone personal assistant to its desktop OS. The 92-page document details how you'll interact with Apple's "digital assistant," a term that occurs 574 times in the patent app (the name Siri never makes an appearance, however). According to the document, a desktop version could pair Siri's current actions with more complex functionality, such as file and system management. After calling on the assistant by using a specific gesture on the touch pad or clicking an icon in the dock, you could use it to send emails, find images or YouTube videos on the web, print documents or copy and "hold" multiple files. As TechCrunch notes, there's no reference to such an assistant in the Yosemite beta preview, so it'll probably be at least another year before Siri (or her better-equipped equivalent) arrives on the Mac.
